Daggers pierced the soft loam underhoof as the red stallion moved through the trees. The ground was soft, from the nearby river and it's swamp. Rohan had traveled far, through many territories, some already belonging to others. Now he had found a territory that suited him - one that was still unclaimed by another stallion. That is what he had been searchig for; the perfect territory, still unclaimed. Here he would settle himself, and then go in search of mares to make his herd grow. He wanted to become powerful, to rule the land here with a strong will. But hewould be just and give good judgement. He wasn't foolish.
Only one more sweep through the territory, and then he would make his final decision. The forest here was dark, because of the mountain's shadow and the leaves overhead. But he liked it that way, with little light to bother him. The trees were large and grew far enough apart to allow a horse to speed through rather swiftly, so long as it watched it's footing. But there were deer paths that could be traveled along as well. There was a great river here, that rushed through the forest and out onto the plains. Much of it ran through swamp land that would be hard to travel for a horse, but that wouldbe no matter for those who lived here, so long as they learned the safe path through the swamp. It would make a good defnese.
Now Rohan had made his decision. There was plently of greenery here for a herd, as well as plently of room and good places to hide should the need arise. He had scented a cougar only once - but that would not be much of a problem once he dealt with it. He had scented bears, but they would leave horses alone, so long as horses did not threaten them. There were many deer here as well, which would serve as a food source for the cougar, keeping it from the herd. With a final sweep of his blood-red eyes, Rohan lifted his head and neighed, letting all know that this place was to be his home. He would build a herd - a family - here in these forests and plains, beneath the shadow of the mountain.
